Alexis Sanchez’s second-half goal secured a vital 1-0 win for Sevilla against Real Sociedad, keeping alive the hosts’ hopes of survival in a hotly contested La Liga clash.
Sevilla hosted Real Sociedad at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán on May 4, 2026, with both teams desperate for points. The home side finished 18th in the table with 34 points from 33 games, while the Society took ninth position with 43 points. Sevilla’s recent form read poorly: defeats, defeats, a win and two more defeats. The Society arrived with mixed results, looking for consistency in their push for European qualification.
The first 45 minutes unfolded as a tense affair with few clear-cut chances. Both teams entered the game cautiously. In the 28th minute, the referee’s whistle blew twice in quick succession as yellow cards flew. Jon Aramburu was booked for Sociedad, while García earned one for Sevilla moments later.
Sevilla controlled proceedings without dominating possession. The home side created space in dangerous areas but lacked the finishing touch. The Real Sociedad, for its part, fought to win everything and enjoy the ball more. The visitors managed just one shot off target in the first period, a telling statistic about their hard-hitting attacking play.
The half ended goalless, although Sevilla’s expected goal figure of 1.39 suggested they deserved a lead. Real Sociedad’s xG of 0.17 reflected their ineffectiveness in the final third. Neither goalkeeper faced significant pressure before the break.
The second half brought an immediate change. Alexis Sánchez broke the scoreboard in the 50th minute with a clinical finish. The striker found space inside the area and fired past the Sociedad goalkeeper to spark celebrations from the home crowd.
Sevilla’s advantage energized the stadium. The hosts pushed forward looking for a second goal to end the game. However, Real Sociedad refused to fold and began to cause problems for Sevilla’s defence. Gabriel Suazo, the home side’s best defender, made nine tackles over the course of 94 minutes and produced an impressive performance at the back.
The yellow cards piled up as the tension mounted. Sánchez picked up a booking in the 75th minute for his celebrations and challenges. José Ángel Carmona received one in the 88th minute as Sevilla looked to maintain their lead.
Real Sociedad put a lot of pressure in the last stages but couldn’t find the equaliser. The visitors registered zero shots on target throughout the game, a clear reflection of their struggles in attack. Sevilla’s defense held firm despite late pressure from Real Sociedad.
The statistics painted a clear picture of the contest. Sevilla took 19 shots against the five of the club. Real Sociedad dominated possession with 57 per cent to Sevilla’s 43 per cent, but this advantage was of little value. Sevilla’s goalkeeper has not made any saves, while Sociedad’s has made four.
This victory was crucial for Sevilla’s battle for survival. The three points raised their hopes in a difficult season. Real Sociedad’s failure to score has them looking for consistency as they try to secure European football.
