Testing vs. Buying: What drivers golfers are buying vs. our top performers


Every year, we conduct the largest independent driver test in golf, because most golfers want answers that come from data, not marketing.

For 2026, that meant 42 drivers, 35 testers, 20,580 shots and more than 400,000 data points.

This test gives us a lot of information. But there is another side to the story. It’s what golfers buy when they walk into a store, test several options on a tee, and decide which one goes in the bag.

PGA TOUR Superstore recently shared an insight into which drivers are selling well right now. We compared their best-selling drivers to MyGolfSpy’s 2026 Top 10 to see where performance and real-world buying behavior stack up.

Five drivers appear on both lists

When you compare the list of best selling drivers in PGA TOUR Superstore and top 10 from testing, five drivers appear in both.

This overlay is interesting because it shows where test results and consumer demand match. Drivers don’t drop to the highest level of our most demanding test by chance. They earn those points through consistent performance in distance, accuracy and forgiveness.

At the same time, retail demand reflects what players are happy to put into the game. When these two things match, it’s usually a strong signal that a driver delivers performance and confidence.

Distance is an obvious topic

A performance trend stands out among the drivers that appear on both lists: distance.

Distance has the most weight in our model of the most wanted points, calculating 40 percent of MGS score. Some of the overlapping drivers produced some of the strongest distance numbers in the entire test.

When it comes time to make a purchase, distance matters.

Qi4D stands right at the center of this story

Her strength is balance. Rather than dominating a single category, Qi4D produced top-notch results across the board:

A driver must deliver distance by keeping the ball in play and producing consistent results from shot to shot. Seeing Qi4D showing up among the top-selling drivers at the PGA TOUR Superstore reinforces what testing already suggested.

The previous generation drivers are still selling strongly

One of the most interesting insights from PGA TOUR Superstore it had nothing to do with brand new releases.

With new driver prices on the rise, golfers continue to look for value where they can find it.

If a driver performed well when it launched and the price drops once the next generation arrives, many golfers see this as the perfect opportunity to upgrade without paying full retail.

It’s also a reminder that the performance gap between generations isn’t always dramatic enough to outweigh a significant price difference.

Final thoughts

Testing and retail measure two different things.
