Jack Catterall reacts to reports of Rolly Romero’s summer return

Jack Catterall has responded to reports that WBA welterweight champion Rolly Romero is expected to make a summer title defense against a lesser opponent rather than face him straight away.

Rolly is expected to defend his title this summer, although a “tough fight” is not expected for his first appearance since defeating Ryan Garcia in May 2025. Catterall was quick to respond on social media.

The comments come after the WBA ordered Romero and Catterall to begin negotiations for a fight within 180 days.

Romero has not defended the WBA welterweight title since defeating Ryan more than a year ago, a reign that has now lasted more than 12 months.

Former mandatory challenger Shakhram Giyasov finally moved on after waiting for his title opportunity and instead faced Catterall on the May 23 “Glory in Giza” card held at the Pyramids in Egypt.

Catterall defeated Giyasov by unanimous decision over 12 rounds at the Pyramids of Giza to capture the WBA’s secondary welterweight title and improve his position in the sanctioning body’s rankings.

After that win, the WBA ordered Rolly and Catterall to negotiate a match, potentially setting up a title consolidation fight at welterweight.

Catterall appears frustrated by reports suggesting Rolly may take a voluntary defense before facing him. The scheduled bout would give Catterall his first opportunity to challenge for the WBA’s primary welterweight championship at 147 pounds as a professional.
