Nelly Korda is still in the mix to win her third straight championship on Sunday, although on Saturday she was still a little worried about her third-round exit.
Korda missed 1,178 shots on the green during the third round of the match The KPMG PGA Women’s Championship at Hazeltine in Chaska, Minn., which was ranked 55th in the field. She swept a good ball-striking day in which she tied for 9th in Strokes Gained: Tee to Green.
Korda shot a one-under 71 and she is tied with Alison Lee at seven under. They are four back of the leader, Haeran Ryu, who shot 68 and at 11 under is the sole leader.
After winning the first two races of the season, a win on Sunday would mean Korda would become only the third player in history to win the first three championships of the season. A win would also give her the 27 points needed to gain entry to the LPGA Hall of Fame.
Korda said how aggressive she can be on Sunday depends on the weather.
“The green bells are pretty smooth; they don’t have a lot of grass on them,” Korda said. “Short shots are pretty tough. Generally, when it’s windy like this, you have to account for the wind as well as a blast here and there. Sometimes you’re just not as confident with your lines.”
Also in contention is Brooke Henderson, who shot a 69 on Saturday and Ina Yoonwho is eyeing her first major win.
It’s been a particularly notable week for Henderson already. Her sister, Brittany, gave birth to a daughter on Thursday. Brittany caddied for Brooke until she left due to her pregnancy.
“It’s been a great week,” Brooke Henderson said Sunday. “Honestly, I think it’s just thanks to my granddaughter coming into this world. I’ve just been really happy. I’ve been working hard on myself and also my game starting this week, so I feel like it’s good to see it pay off a little bit.
“But yeah, thanks to my niece, I feel like we’re going with good energy and I’m looking forward to the opportunity tomorrow to post a good round and just see what happens.”
Henderson, Yoon and Ryu are in the final three and meet at 10:25 a.m. ET on Sunday.
