Croatia vs Ghana full match recap

Croatia progressed to the last 16 of the World Cup as Group L runners-up after a tense and dramatic 2-1 win over Ghana at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, with Petar Sučić and Nikola Vlašić proving the difference on a crucial Saturday night.

The result was decisive for Zlatko Dalić’s side, who went into the match knowing that only a win would guarantee their progression.

Ghana, meanwhile, had only needed a draw to secure their place in the knockout stages, a cushion that ultimately failed to insulate them from Croatia’s determination.

Croatia controlled the first half with a composure that belied the pressure of the occasion.

Luka Modrić and Mateo Kovačić pulled the strings in midfield, completing passes at a relentless pace and limiting Ghana to rare moments of attacking intent on a warm Philadelphia night.

The tie was broken in the 31st minute. Kovačić produced a sharp, incisive pass that released Sučić, who struck cleanly from distance to send the ball darting past Benjamin Asare.

It was a goal of real quality and one that rewarded Croatia’s patient, possession-based approach in the opening period.

Ghana responded after the interval with more urgency. Manager Carlos Queiroz made his intentions clear at half-time, bringing on Kamal Peprah and Abdul Fatawu at the break, and the Black Stars began probing the Croatian backline with more ambition.

The tie came in the 73rd minute and it owed a lot to the substitute Ernest Nuamah, who had barely been on the pitch for two minutes.

Nuamah’s floating delivery into the box was met by Derrick Luckassen, who intervened from close range.

A lengthy VAR review confirmed that the goal stood, and the referees determined that Kwasi Sibo, in an offside position, had not interfered with play.

Croatia refused to give in. Modrić, playing in his fifth World Cup at the age of 40, orchestrated the response with characteristic authority.

It was the captain who provided the decisive contribution in the 83rd minute, making a pinpoint assist through the Ghanaian defense for Vlašić to finish clinically and restore Croatia’s lead.

Ivan Perišić had seen yellow in the 68th minute after a clumsy foul on Fatawu, and the closing stages were fractious, with Ghana pressing desperately for an equaliser.

Substitute Kwame Peprah picked up a booking in stoppage time as tensions rose, but Croatia held firm.

The statistics underlined Croatia’s control throughout the contest.

Dalić’s side completed 474 of 517 passes, an accuracy rate of 92%, and recorded four shots on goal in Ghana’s game, with goalkeeper Asare called twice to deny the Croatians another reward.
