I finally made it through my first round with the new one Arccos Air Game Tracking Unit as well as Arccos Smart Laserand the new device was impressive. I still have a lot to learn about effectively using the hardware combination with the app, as well as figuring out how to properly implement stats to improve my game, but so far things have been easy. My colleague Maddi MacClurg and played 18 holes at The Boulders just outside of Scottsdale, Ariz., with both Arcos Air and the new one Smart laser. Here are 3 things that got me really excited.
1. The smart laser
I’ve talked about this in other content, but the Smart Laser is so impressive. I’ve played a handful of rounds with the tech now and every time I use the laser it still gives me that “cool factor” feeling. In combination with the application, Smart laser helps you effortlessly set the pin based on GPS data. When you stand at any spot on the hole you’re playing and shoot the pin, it starts calling that pin spot on the green.
You can then go into the green view in the app and it will show you where the pin is on the green and the slopes around that pin. It helps you make smarter decisions about how to attack your approach shots, and I really appreciate that everything is done perfectly, with no babysitting or buttons to push. It’s the same experience you’re used to. capture smart laser, shoot the pin. The app updates automatically and gives you instructions.

2. Speed of intelligence
This biggest stumbling block for people in our Instagram and YouTube comments is the idea that you have to “care” for intelligence. I can assure you, it’s a quick learning process. I went into this round with zero Arccos data on the app; technology had nothing to come up with. During our round, in the tee box of a windy par-3 front nine, I stood there for about two minutes deciding what club I wanted to hit. I went with an 8-iron and by the time I was walking off the tee after my shot, the app had already determined I had hit an 8-iron. Even though I had no historical data, Arccos is pulling from hundreds of thousands of shots it captured with other users who have similar trends and tracking distances to me and using that information to help me. How beautiful!

For me, the biggest thing here is understanding what you want from the app. I personally don’t care at all about tracking my club distances, so going back after the round and maybe having to change a few clubs is no big deal to me. If you’re someone who’s really into tracking individual club performance, then you might think you need to care a little more about the app. So far for me though, I haven’t had any breaks in my game and I think over the four rounds now going on ArcosI had to tell them mostly what club I hit off the tee because I don’t always use the “recommended” option.
3. I am shocked by the statistics, in a good way
I’m not a statistics guy. I’m a club man. My golf comes in waves, and most of it comes from rarely having the same 14 clubs in my bag and testing as much as I do, which makes finding a groove difficult. I’ve been lucky enough to get some great lessons from top coaches, but that information rarely lasts more than a few weeks. Not that I have all that Arcos statistics, I’m intrigued by their usefulness moving forward.

I haven’t been able to fully immerse myself in the data yet, and it’s actually something I hope to do while being supervised by a golf data specialist or a coach, because I can’t tell you that I really understand everything I’m looking at. The nice part is that most of the statistics are broken down with graphs, and they are in pieces. There’s not much to decipher, and it somehow leads to water. My problem is that there are a lot of things to sort out right now as a new user and being a “new to hit data” guy. I like it, but I need to understand it more.
A perfect example is my driving stats. I have felt zero confidence in my driver this year. I have tried several placement combinations but everything is in motion. Something just doesn’t feel right. If you ask someone I talk to about my game how it’s going this year, they’ll probably tell you that all I do is complain about my driver. In reality, according to Arcco, I don’t actually have to worry about it. Knowing this kind of frees the mind in a way. Next time I go out, I’ll feel a little less stressed on the tee – and focus on my putting a little more.
If you want to get some Arccos gear for yourself, be sure to use the code GOLFMAG15 at checkout on their website.
