“Munguia says his experience will be the difference, but Plant was also more experienced than me,” said Resendiz of the training camp with Manny Robles. “He’s faced bigger names, but I’m a fighter that keeps getting better and better. There are no limits. That’s what I want to show people on May 2.”
This is perhaps the clearest sign yet of how Resendiz views this game. He doesn’t enter as a champion hoping to defend a belt. He sounds like a man who believes the Plant victory was just the beginning.
Resendiz also made it clear that Munguia is not being overlooked, saying he has followed the former titleholder for years and respects what he brings.
“I’ve studied him a lot. I’ve watched him since I started climbing as a professional. He’s a keen Mexican boxer with a wealth of experience.”
The danger for Munguia is that Resendiz arrives with confidence built from a career-changing win, while still believing he has more room to improve. Fighters with that mindset can be difficult to handle once the first few rounds are over.
Although Munguia has been in the spotlight for over a decade, those miles on the odometer may be catching up with him, especially after his recent rocky stretch.
The December 2024 loss to Bruno Surace was a massive wake-up call that exposed some serious defensive holes.
Even though Munguia avenged that loss with a unanimous decision in Riyadh in May 2025, the fact that he was stopped by a relatively unknown opponent in the first place suggests that his “wealth of experience” didn’t necessarily make him harder to hit.
Munguia turned pro in 2013 at just 16 years old. Having 47 professional fights by the age of 29 takes a lot of physical toll, especially given his “gritty” style where he often relies on taking two shots to get one.
Armando Resendiz is the literal opposite of an old 29. He has significantly less miles on him and is coming off the best performance of his life against Caleb Plant.
Resendiz has only been in 18 pro fights. He hasn’t been through the decade-plus of grueling camps that Munguia has.
Resendiz meets Munguia on May 2 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on the David Benavidez vs. Gilberto Ramirez undercard.
