Chris Billam-Smith overcame a determined challenge from Ryan Rozicki to claim a stoppage victory in their cruiserweight main event on Saturday night at the Bournemouth International Center in Dorset, Bournemouth, England.
The contest served as the main attraction for Zuffa Boxing’s first event in the UK and delivered the physical, tough fight that many expected.
The contest was largely fought at close range and included several head-to-head collisions. Rozicki suffered cuts over both eyes as the rounds progressed.
Billam-Smith found increasing success in the second half of the fight and finished the seventh round strong.
Neither fighter gave much ground in the first half of the fight, but Billam-Smith found increasing success with his cleaner punches and higher work rate.
By the seventh round, it looked like the former world champion had taken control. Billam-Smith landed several crisp combinations and repeatedly connected with clean punches as Rozicki continued to march forward.
The sustained attack took its toll.
After a tough seventh round, Rozicki was unable to continue, bringing an end to the match and giving Billam-Smith a stoppage victory. The official result went into the books as a seventh round TKO.
The victory improved Billam-Smith’s record to 22-2 with 14 knockouts and provided another significant win in front of his hometown fans.
For Rozicki, the defeat ended a valiant effort in which he remained dangerous throughout but was eventually worn down by Billam-Smith’s volume, accuracy and tenacity.
The win keeps Billam-Smith firmly in the conversation for major cruiserweight fights moving forward as he continues his pursuit of another world title opportunity.
