World Cup Classification – Group Stage
Bosnia and Herzegovina secured a vital 3-1 victory over Qatar at Lumen Field thanks to a clinical finish in their World Cup clash.
Both nations went into the match looking for their first win of the tournament. Having picked up just one point from their opening games, a win was essential to keep their Group B knockout stage hopes alive.
Bosnia started the game on the front foot and controlled the early tempo with accurate passing. They looked dangerous from distance, testing Qatar’s defensive line with several quick attacking transitions.
The pressure paid off in the 29th minute as Kerim Alajbegović found space near the edge of the box and drilled home a powerful shot to break the deadlock.
Just five minutes later, Bosnia doubled their lead. A dangerous cross forced Qatari defender Meshaal Abunada to clear the ball, but he accidentally turned the ball into his own net.
Qatar responded quickly before the interval to stay in the contest. In the 42nd minute, Hassan Al Haydos had a good effort in the corner after a clever pass from Edmilson Junior.
The strike at the end of the first half has given Qatar new hope heading into the dressing room. Bosnia needed to regain their defensive form, while the Asian champions looked to build on their momentum.
The second half turned into a physical battle as both teams battled for midfield control. Qatar pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but struggled to break down a resilient Bosnia defence.
As time went on, the tension grew and Abdullah Fathi was shown a yellow card in the 78th minute. Bosnia punished their opponents almost immediately from the resulting play to seal the win.
Substitute Ermin Mahmić sealed the victory in the 80th minute by slotting home with a precise finish. The goalscorer was booked just two minutes later, but the damage was already done.
Bosnia controlled 56 percent of the ball and registered 14 shots during the match. While Qatar finished with a similar expected goals score of 0.67 to 0.65, Bosnia proved to be far more efficient.
The win keeps Bosnia in contention for a place in the next round. Meanwhile, Qatar face a tough final game as they look to salvage their World Cup campaign.
