Test cricket T20 leagues are fighting a gradual decline in popularity as their rapid rise continues to reshape the global game. The growing franchise tournament calendar has shifted the focus away from the traditional five-day format, while modern icons have emerged from the ultimate test. Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Kane Williamson further reduced fan engagement. As debate rages over who the former India captain can inspire a new generation to embrace red-ball cricket Chris Srikanth believes that the answer may now come in the form of India’s teenage prodigy.
Kris Srikkanth picks a young star who can revive Test cricket
Speaking to PTI, Srikkanth singled out India’s young sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi and expressed unwavering confidence that Suryavanshi has the qualities needed not only to succeed across formats but also to restore the appeal of Test cricket.
The former player praised the youngster’s fearless mentality and hunger for big scores, suggesting that his attacking instincts are balanced by the patience required for longer innings.
“What I like about Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is that he has an appetite for runs and an appetite to dominate. At the same time, he could stay in and play. If he moves from T20 cricket to one-day cricket and then to Test cricket, and if he clicks into Test cricket, he will try cricket, I am sure he will try cricket.” Srikkanth said.
He also highlighted the excitement that Suryavanshi created among the audience, comparing his growing popularity to the magnetic pull that cricket’s biggest superstars once enjoyed.
“Today you need a cricketer like that. People switch on the TV just to watch Sooryavanshi. I switch on the TV to watch Sooryavanshi. It’s the aura he creates around himself. He’s something amazing.” added the former India key.
Srikkanth’s comments underline his belief that charming personalities and entertaining batting styles can play a major role in bringing audiences back to the traditional format.

High expectations surround the teenage sensation
Suryavanshi’s rapid rise has made him one of the most talked about young talents in Indian cricket. Despite his age, he is already known for his fearless batting approach and ability to dominate bowling attacks without compromising technique.
The youngster has been picked for India’s upcoming T20I tours of Ireland and England, a milestone that reflects the faith the selectors have placed in his potential. Strong performances in these assignments could accelerate his journey towards ODIs and ultimately test cricket.
While many young players initially establish themselves in the white-ball format, Srikkanth believes Suryavanshi has the temperament to excel in the longer version as well. His confidence in the youngster suggests he sees a player who can entertain the crowd but also make important shots under pressure.
