Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero (17-2, 13 food) rejuvenated his career by defeating the heavy favorite Ryan Garcia (24-2, 20 COs) by a unanimous 12-round decision to conquer the vacant WBA ‘ordinary’ Welterweight title on Times Square in New York on Saturday night.
Romero achieved Ryan in round two a big knockout from Ryan. Garcia seems to have never recovered from the shot to fight with the intensity he needed to win. The combination of Rolly’s Knockdown and the constant pressure he put on Ryan was an important factor in his victory tonight.
The scores were 115-112, 115-112 and 118-109. Rolly eliminated Garcia in the championships and controlled the action of the ninth.
Romero’s punching power kept Garcia on defense and was unwilling to take any risks to try to land something important. When Ryan tried to come back into the fight in the middle rounds, Rolly concluded by applying pressure with his stitch and power shots.
Romero was missing big blows of Homerun and barely. If you only see that the shots are whistling through Ryan, Ryan can get any ideas to fight more aggressively. He didn’t want to be cut again.
Garcia looked slow, slow, tired and scared throughout the fight. The second round took too much out of him and destroyed his will to win. He seems to just give up.
It is unknown whether Ryan fought with an injury to one of his arms because he did not beat his left hook, and rarely used his right hand during the fight. He allowed Rolly to dictate the fight and control the action. Rolly seems to realize in the last quarter of the fight that Garcia was not prepared to throw. At that point, Romero gained confidence and did what he wanted from rounds 9-12.
