Mhambrey also highlighted the importance of red-ball cricket in the development of bowlers, saying the format offers players a true test of skill, stamina and mental toughness. The challenges faced during long sessions in first-class cricket, where bowlers are pushed to their limits, are essential to understanding and improving their craft.

According to the former Indian bowling coach, Malik’s limited exposure to first-class cricket is likely to have contributed to his current struggles as he has yet to develop the stamina needed to continue performing across formats.

Mhambrey signed off by saying: “We made sure he plays Ranji Trophy and red ball cricket. Once you play a season, you understand your bowling. Physically, you will be tested at different stages of the game.

Sometimes you will have to stay on the floor for six sessions. And when the final session comes, you will be physically and mentally challenged to bowl with that intensity. And you have to get over it.”
