Why it doesn’t make sense to chase the perfect golf club specs


When you find a club that you hit well, it’s best not to question it. What do they say about never looking a gift horse in the mouth?

But there’s always something that makes us gear nerds want to overanalyze everything.

And so that brings us to the dilemma of GOLF’s Jake Morrow, who, until recently, was having some major struggles with the driver. Everything changed when he got the new one Title GTS3 for which he was fit Titleist’s TPI facility.

It is one The new GTS3 with the Graphite Design Tour AD-FI shaft, which Morrow didn’t really expect to get into, but has turned into a weapon.

“I have an Arcco statement that says I’m now a perfect driver of the golf ball and other things are my problem,” Morrow told GOLF’s Fully Equipped co-host Johnny Wunder on this week’s episode. “I hit some absolute nukes. There were some references to Walmarts being between me and my coach on some of those shots.”

There is only one issue. When Morrow decided the new driver on the moving scalewas recorded on a solid D8.

As a gear nerd, Morrow naturally approached his fitter, TPI’s Hunter Brown, and wondered if he was still the best driver for him.

“I said, ‘Hey, man, my only problem is with my scale at home. It came out to D8 and that’s a little aggressive,'” he said. “Now, the conversation and after playing four rounds, if everyone told me not to mess with it, I’d leave it as is and be happy. But you can tell the head is heavy. The shaft is a little soft, but not in a bad way. The only anxiety was for the first two rounds, it was all left-right ball flight.”

Morrow wanted to take the 5-yard fade he was kicking and make it 5 yards by taking The driver up to D6.

But if he was hitting the driver so well, why bother with him? That was Wunder’s answer.

“You’re chasing perfection. And when you said you had that in D8, my first instinct was like, so what?” he said. “For example, this is a number you care about. It’s not a number that matters to the driver’s performance.”

Morrow would ask Brown for a weight bag, but Wunder said he would tell him not to send one. The driver works now, don’t mess with a good thing.

“If he sends me the weights to fix it, then I’ll give it a try,” Morrow said. “If he doesn’t or they lose in the post, then I’ve got what I’ve got and I’m going to keep playing it.”

Maybe this is one of those situations where it would have been better to just leave well enough alone.
