MG5 is collecting equipment from Kapalua to Augusta. It also earned the second best wedge of 2025 in our annual wedge test. But with six grind options, choosing the right one matters. Here is everything you need to know.
When TaylorMade launched MG5 in August 2025, the title was live. The Milled Grind family was fully formed for the first time. Mild carbon steel, saw milled grooves pushed to the legal limit and a spin face designed to keep spin in wet conditions.
of MG5 finished runner-up overall in our 2025 wedge test with an 8.8 out of 10, posting outstanding scores for durability (9.1), accuracy (8.7) and spin (8.7). Testers noted that it was one of the tightest performers in controlling carry distance in full swings, 50-yard dry throws, and 50-yard wet throws. He also kept almost all of his spin on wet shots.

SB – Standard Jump: Comprehensive
SB is the safe default for most players. Its four-way camber allows you to play it from tight fairways, tight and easy lies without changing much of your technique. You can play chip-and-run shots with a slightly forward shaft tilt, use full bounce for forgiveness, or even lift the grip a touch and play it tip-down to get off tighter lies.
SC – Standard Camber: The creative camber
SC is built for players who like to work with the face. Whether you like to open it up for high and soft shots, close it down for low runners, or play in a variety of pitch conditions, the SC is a good fit.
Significant heel grinding means the heel stays close to the ground even when the face is open. You can play high shots. The wider toe also gives you extra forgiveness in less-than-perfect contact. If you play a course that runs medium to hard and like to have multiple shot options, the SC is a good option to consider.
SX — Standard Xtra: The Pardoner of Flesh
The SX has the widest sole of the three standard shutters, making it the most forgiving on off-center contact. The smart design element is the reverse C camera cut into the rear edge. If you don’t play every week and occasionally hit it a little heavy, the SX will save you the shots that other wedges would miss. It is also good out of bunkers.
HB – High Jump: For steep swings and soft ground
The HB is designed specifically for golfers who drive deep into the ball. The high bounce keeps the club moving through the ground instead of getting stuck. It is also the easiest wedge in the formation to escape bunkers. The extra bounce sprays the sand forward with a shallow entry.
If you play on soft or wet greens or often find yourself getting chipped by small greens all around, the wider sole glides through tall grass instead of gripping. Combination: If you play hard or compact sand links-style courses, the extra bounce can work against you.
LB – Low Bounce: For tight lies and shallow swings
LB is for strong, compact or link-style conditions. Less bounce means the leading edge can more easily get under the ball on tight lies, steep inclines and steep slopes. Also suitable for fine sand bunkers. LB requires better technique than HB or SX as there is less margin for error. However, under the right conditions, it unlocks shots that other shutters can’t hit as cleanly.
TW – Grind Tiger Woods: A special wedge
The TW grip is not available as a standard option on the MG5 wedge. TaylorMade sells it as a separate product at a small price.
The grind itself was developed around Tiger’s actual wedge preferences. It features increased camber, a new leading edge compound for more effective heel bounce and additional heel relief. It’s a setup built for a player who wants maximum versatility.
The TW grip is best suited for handicap players with strong short game technique who want to work the face in multiple directions and need a grind that stays consistent regardless of the shot shape.
