Sydney Sixers have announced the appointment of a new head coach ahead of the upcoming Big Bash League



The Sydney Sixers they ushered in a new era by appointing the former Australian all-rounder James Hopes as head coach on a two-year contract. The announcement on Monday (May 4) signals a new direction for one of the most consistent teams in the Big Bash League as they aim to build on their strong legacy.

A new chapter begins for the Sydney Sixers

The 47-year-old Hopes takes up his first full-time head coaching role after years of experience in assistant roles in franchise cricket. Known for his sharp cricketing skills, especially in bowling strategy, he replaces the long-serving coach. Greg Shipperdwho parted ways with the franchise after finishing second in the most recent BBL season.

One of the most decorated teams in the tournament’s history, the Sixers have lifted the BBL trophy three times and have consistently been among the highest-performing sides. However, after narrowly missing out on the title last season, the management opted for a change of management to inject fresh ideas and energy into the squad.

From supporting roles to senior positions

Umid’s appointment marks a significant step forward in his coaching journey. Although this is his first job as a head coach, he brings with him a wealth of experience from working behind the scenes with various teams. It should be noted that he works as a bowling coach Kings of the Punjab when it continues Indian Premier League (IPL)where he was credited with improving bowling units and developing young talent.

Reacting to the appointment, Hopes expressed both pride and excitement to lead such a prestigious franchise. He cited the Sixers’ strong culture and consistent performances as key factors that attracted him to the role.

“I am incredibly proud to join the Sydney Sixers, which has a proud history and a strong identity built on consistency, competitiveness and engagement with its fans. I am excited to work with a talented playing group and contribute to the next phase of the Sixers’ success in the BBL.” Umid said in a statement.

He has an experienced international career behind him

Before moving into coaching, Hopes enjoyed a solid international career with the Australian national cricket team. He represented Australia in 84 One Day Internationals and 12 T20 Internationals, his last appearance in 2010.

Known for his ability to contribute with both bat and ball, Hopes was considered a reliable all-rounder during his playing days. His experience at the highest level of the game is expected to play a key role in mentoring the players and handling pressure situations.
