Aloha, Hawaii. Sentry is moving to San Diego.
The PGA Tour announced Monday that Sentry Insurance will take over the title sponsorship of the Tour’s longest-running event held at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego. Starting next season, the tournament will be called The Sentry.
If this name sounds familiar, that’s because it is.
The Sentry, sponsored by Sentry Insurance, had long been the season-opening event of the tournament held in Hawaii, although it was canceled this year and reports of its demise began to circulate. In April, the Tour confirmed it will not return to Hawaii in 2027.
At the Players Championship in March, PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp said one of them The six themes of the tournament important to his future would be the start of the splashy West Coast season – “we want to open a big event with a party in an iconic location,” he said – in late January. Parts of the 2027 schedule have it slowly flows out over the past couple of months, though The Sentry won’t be the event to kick off the new season next year. Its dates are January 27-30, 2027, which includes a Saturday finish so it doesn’t interfere with the NFL playoffs. American Express in La Quinta, California, is already confirmed for January 21-24, 2027.
In that aforementioned Rolapp press conference, he said more significant changes are likely to occur in 2028, which includes his two-track schedule. It’s unclear where The Sentry might fit in then, though it might be a logical place to start future seasons.
The PGA Tour has played at Torrey Pines every year since 1968, using both the North and South courses for its events. (The South Course has also hosted two US Opens.) The tournament has changed names several times over the years, though it was the Farmers Insurance Open from 2010 to 2026, with Justin Rose winning the last addition. Reports first surfaced in 2024 that Farmers Insurance would not renew its contract at Torrey Pines when it expired in 2026.
