Garcia (25-2, 20 KOs) fueled that direction himself by posting on X after Benn’s win over Regis Prograis that he is ready to fight. He went further soon after and predicted a one-sided outcome.
“Mark my words: His corner or the ref stops my fight with Conor in the 6-7 round,” said Ryan Garcia.
Benn (25-1, 14 KOs) did his part to push the fight forward with a unanimous decision over Prograis last Saturday in London, winning by three scores, 98-92. The result kept him in position as the WBC’s top contender, but the performance drew a mixed reaction, with some questioning whether he was better suited at a higher weight.
Garcia, who won the WBC welterweight title in February with a wide decision over Mario Barrios, was set to make his first defense. The fight has also been linked to Saudi involvement after Turki Alalshikh expressed interest in hosting a Garcia fight this summer.
Benn’s recent activity adds another element to the talks. He fought Prograis under a one-fight, $15 million deal with Zuffa Boxing, a move that raised questions about where he would land next if the Garcia fight was done.
The timing is still being worked out, but both sides are now talking in a way that suggests that’s the direction they’re headed.
Garcia is already talking like it’s ending early. Benn has yet to prove he can keep up at this level.
