Rayo Vallecano and Real Sociedad shared the spoils in a thrilling six-goal contest at Campo de Futbol de Vallecas, with Alemao’s spectacular stoppage-time goal earning the visitors a 3-3 draw.
Rayo Vallecano hosted Real Sociedad on April 26 looking to move away from mid-table mediocrity. The home team took 12th place with 38 points from 32 games. The Society came in 8th place with 42 points, looking to maintain its momentum in the standings. Both teams entered the match looking for momentum in the final weeks of the season.
Mikel Oyarzabal opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, giving Sociedad an early lead. The striker found space and finished clinically to put the visitors ahead. However, Rayo responded quickly through Sergio Camello just eight minutes later. Camello tied the game in the 30th minute, energizing the home crowd and setting up a competitive second half.
The first 45 minutes were very contested after Camello’s equaliser. Both teams created chances but neither managed a second goal before the break. Disciplinary problems arose, with yellow cards to Ismael Palazon and Sergio Gómez. The stage was set for an entertaining second half.
Oscar Oskarsson restored Sociedad’s lead in the 63rd minute, firing past the Rayo keeper. The visiting team seemed to take control of the contest. Oyarzabal doubled his tally from the penalty spot in the 76th minute, extending Sociedad’s lead to 3-1. Rayo faced an uphill battle with time running out.
Rayo refused to give up. In the 84th minute, Florian Lejeune made it 3-2 and revived hopes at home. The momentum shifted dramatically to the hosts. Then, in the 90th minute plus nine seconds, Alemao scored an incredible equaliser. The Society had snatched a draw from the jaws of defeat.
The final whistle sparked chaos. Palazon received a red card in stoppage time for his second yellow offence. Rayo dominated possession with 58 percent, but managed just nine shots on goal. The Society created fewer chances, registering eight attempts on goal. Oyarzabal’s two goals earned him an 8.5 rating, leading all players.
The tie leaves Rayo in 12th position with 38 points. The Society remains 8th with 42 points. Both teams missed opportunities to climb the table. The result reflects the competitive nature of the middle ranks of the League as the season enters the final stretch.
