Oscar Collazo wants Ricardo Sandoval to fight, says he’d like to stay at 112 pounds

Oscar Collazo may have entered Saturday night’s fight expecting a temporary weight gain, but he left Frontwave Arena sounding like a fighter who wants to stay.

After his second-round stoppage of late replacement Neider Valdez Aguilar in Oceanside, Calif., the unified bantamweight champion revealed he enjoyed competing at flyweight and is interested in taking on bigger fights at 112 pounds.

“I feel great. I feel great. I love this division,” Collazo told DAZN. “In fact, I want to stay in the division for a long time. Let’s see.”

The fight at flyweight was originally seen as a temporary adjustment following Joey Canoy’s withdrawal, but Collazo has since indicated that he could stay in the division if the right opportunities present themselves.

One opportunity immediately caught his attention. During his post-fight interview, Collazo was asked about a possible showdown with the WBA and WBO flyweight champion Ricardo Sandoval.

“I really want it. It really interests me,” Collazo said. “I’m ready for it. I’m ready for the big fights. I’m ready to make history. This is the fight I want.”

A fight between Collazo and Sandoval would match two reigning champions from neighboring weight classes. Sandoval recently captured the WBA and WBO flyweight titles and has emerged as one of the division’s top names.

Promoter Oscar De La Hoya quickly underwrote the bout after hearing Collazo’s interest.

“I want Oscar Collazo to go up two weight divisions, and let’s have that fight,” De La Hoya said about a fight against Sandoval.

“This is the biggest, best fight out there for both guys,” he said. “Stylistically, it will be a war. It will be a tremendous, tremendous fight.”

Collazo remains the unified WBA and WBO champion at 105 pounds, while Sandoval holds the WBA and WBO flyweight titles at 112. Both Collazo and promoter Oscar De La Hoya expressed interest in pursuing the match after Saturday night’s win.
