Omni PGA Frisco: A modern golf destination

Much to the surprise of golf traditionalists, Frisco, Texas, is home to the newest and hottest golf destination in the United States, Omni PGA Frisco.

I have been blessed to experience some spectacular destination countries. Each of them has been unforgettable. Some have left me eager to return. The Omni PGA Frisco ranks high on my “revisit” list.

When you arrive at Omni PGA Frisco, you immediately see why PGA of America and Omni partner to create what they label as a home for modern golf.

What makes Omni PGA Frisco, in their words, “A Destination. Endless Fun”?

PGA Frisco – Fields Ranch

The center of attention at Omni PGA Frisco are two golf courses: Fields Ranch East and West. The former will host the 2027 PGA Championship.

PGA Frisco – Fields Ranch East

Gil Hanse and his team designed Fields Ranch East with one theme: organic.

Fields Ranch East uses the natural terrain: rolling hills, dry washes and Panther Creek to create a golf course that emphasizes precision. But this topic can be misleading. You stand on the first tee and see an absurd amount of the golf course. But it’s not as open as you think.

Wind and rolling terrain make the course play tighter than it looks. The green complexes are on the smaller side with ripples. Some show areas of severe leakage. Combine all these factors and Fields Ranch East demands perfection in every shot. If you don’t execute or put yourself in a good place, you will reap the consequences.

There’s more to discuss so take a look at these photos.

With fairways averaging about 75 yards in width, it offers a friendlier challenge for golfers of all skill levels.

Beau Welling designed Fields Ranch East. Like Fields Ranch West, Welling and his team used natural terrain. It has more diversity as prairie and wetlands come into play on some holes. Despite being pardoned, Fields Ranch East seeks execution by firing squad.

One of the most memorable holes is the ninth at Fields Ranch West. It’s an uphill par-5 that can be reached in two shots. However, it is guarded by a monstrous bunker named “Big Bubba”. Thankfully, I dodged Big Bubba on the way to making a birdie.

Overall, Fields Ranch West is a great complement to Fields Ranch East. The wider fairways make it playable and provide what you first feel on the Fields Ranch East tip boxes. He plays wide open on several tee shots. However, there are some high-risk, high-reward tip shots that narrow down in a hurry. Green complexes are also larger, but still have similar flow areas that can make for some tricky up and down scenarios.

What to expect at Fields Ranch

The terrain on every golf course is impeccable. As I continue to experience different golf courses, it is amazing to see the creativity to bring golf courses to life. Some of the hole designs make you wonder “How the hell did the architect visualize this?”

Every golf course here offers box programs. For Fields Ranch East, a box is required, as it is a walking course only. Despite the rolling terrain, the course is easier to walk than I expected…and that’s coming from an amputee.

Wait, there’s more!

The Dance Floor and The Swing

Imagine a standard Wednesday evening in October: in the middle of the work week, the kids are still in school, but you have an outdoor golf retreat accessible to resort guests and the general public. Do you think it’s busy? If your guess is no, you’re missing the mark. This is the Dance Floor and Swing, two gems that make Omni PGA Frisco a one-time dynamite.

The dance floor is the largest natural putting green course in the United States. It occupies two hectares and is fully illuminated. This is the perfect place for an evening gathering and that’s exactly what I saw. There were young families hanging out. There were adults and teenagers enjoying themselves. For golf fanatics, it’s a great place to place some bets.

Next, you have Swing. The Swing is a 10-hole par-3 course co-designed by Hanse and Welling. Each architect designed five holes. However, the other ended up building on and developing the other’s design, a unique feature of Swing’s overall design.

Like the Dance Floor, Swing was buzzing with Wednesday night play. Young and old are eating up the golf course. Our group even saw a junior golfer hit a hole in one. You like to see it.

That’s what you want to see: a center where golf is central, but above all it’s about fun. If you’re serious about growing your golf game, these are the kind of vibes that destination golf courses should implement. They create fun for the whole family. A win-win in my book.

The PGA Circle

With all these golf-centric activities at your fingertips, you’re bound to work up an appetite. Rest assured, the PGA District at Omni PGA Frisco has you covered. Whether you’re looking to play pre-game or refresh after the fact, this is the place to be. Even for non-golfers, it’s a prime spot for some good ole food and drink — and maybe a little Topgolf.

The PGA District is the entire landscape where the Dance Floor and Swing are located. It offers shops and dining options. Here is the list of amenities.

  • The Ice House – This modern, farmhouse-style beer garden is one of the district’s highlights, with six live hitting bays and sweeping views of the Swing action.
  • Lounge by Topgolf – Located in the heart of the PGA District, this venue fuses craft cocktails and locally inspired dishes with the industry-leading Topgolf Swing Suite technology. It offers a variety of virtual games that ensure a fun and interactive atmosphere for everyone.
  • Margaret’s Cones and Cups – This is the ultimate destination for unique gourmet coffee, ice cream and a variety of desserts. It serves as the ideal spot for a post-round dessert or an afternoon refreshment after tackling 18 holes under the Texas sun.

Omni PGA Frisco has 13 on-site dining options. My favorite is Trick Rider.

“Authentic rodeo culture meets fine dining at Trick Rider, a lively venue whose design pays homage to famous rodeo stars and Texas culture with design details like our hand-cut crystal horse chandelier and horseshoe bar. Choose from a wonderful selection of signature steaks, our delicious seafood dishes.”

Is Omni PGA Frisco “the home of modern golf”?

The PGA of America and the Omni are trying to market the Omni PGA Frisco as “the home of modern golf.” This is evident from a championship level golf course, a fun and challenging secondary golf course and numerous amenities that cater to all demographics of golfers and non-golfers alike.

None of this includes the amenities the PGA of America has on the property: their new headquarters and a PGA of America Learning Center. Here is a picture.

“The 12,000-square-foot PGA of America Training Center powered by T-Mobile is located adjacent to the Field’s Farm practice facility at the west end of the Monument Realty PGA District. The unique offering combines 1:1 and group coaching, club fitting and corporate events to create a unique, high-tech, data entry experience for golfers in Frisco, TX.”

When you combine these world-class amenities with the sheer scale of the resort, you get an invigorating atmosphere that’s hard to match. Omni PGA Frisco is a true bucket list destination for any golf enthusiast.
