World Cup Classification – Group Stage
Mexico cruised to a dominant 3-0 win over the Czech Republic at the Estadio Azteca to maintain their perfect start to the World Cup.
A brilliant second-half performance ensured the appointed away team took all three points. Mateo Chávez Garcia broke the deadlock before Julián Quiñones and Álvaro Fidalgo sealed the victory.
Before kick-off, Mexico sat at the top of the table after a winning start. Meanwhile, the Czech Republic needed a positive result to improve their position after picking up just one point in their first match.
The match began at a frenetic pace under the afternoon sun. Czech controlled the ball from the start and looked to build from the back. The European side attempted several long-range efforts, but none troubled the keeper.
At the other end, Mexico looked dangerous whenever they got forward on the wings. Both teams, however, lacked quality in the final third, and the first half ended goalless.
The two coaches had to inspire their teams during the break. Czech wanted to turn their possession into real chances, while Mexico needed to be sharper in attack.
Finally, the breakthrough came in the 55th minute. Chávez Garcia found space inside the box and drilled a powerful shot past the goalkeeper to spark wild celebrations.
Mexico quickly doubled their lead in the 61st minute. Quiñones showed great composure to control a pass from Jorge Sánchez and slot home his effort from close range.
Czech Republic tried to mount a comeback but faced a solid defensive wall. Edson Álvarez picked up a yellow card in the 64th minute for a tactical foul to stop a counterattack.
Fidalgo put the finishing touches on the performance in the 94th minute. The substitute received a pass from Roberto Alvarado and curled a beautiful goal into the top corner.
The statistics showed Mexico’s clinical advantage. They generated an expected goals rating of 1.79 from 11 total shots. Czech managed just one shot on target despite having 52 percent possession.
This result keeps Mexico at the top of the standings with six points from two matches. The Czech Republic need to win their final group stage game to have any hope of progressing.
