Marseille and Nice shared the spoils in a thrilling encounter at the Orange Velodrome, with a late Elye Wahi penalty saving a point for the visitors after Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg had given the hosts the lead.
Marseille went into the match as heavy favourites. The home side took sixth place with 55 points from 31 games, while Nice took 15th place with just 29 points. Marseille’s recent form has been promising with wins and draws mixed in their last five outings. Nice, meanwhile, had won just one of their last five games and were in desperate need of points to move away from the relegation zone.
The first half unfolded as a display of Marseille’s dominance. The locals controlled possession of the ball with 69 percent and created numerous chances. However, they struggled to convert their chances into goals. Nice settled down defensively and tried to take advantage of the space on the counterattack.
Disciplinary problems arose early. Emerson received a yellow card in the 29th minute for Marseille. Both Elye Wahi and Fabián Medina later picked up bookings in the 44th minute. Despite the physical nature of the game, neither team broke the deadlock before the interval.
In the second half, Marseille finally translated their pressure into a goal. In the 66th minute, Hojbjerg hit hard and gave the home team a 1-0 lead. The midfielder’s end came after sustained attacking play from Ligue 1. Marseille looked set to secure all three points.
Nice, however, refused to give up. The visiting team went forward in search of an equaliser. His persistence paid off in the 88th minute when Wahi was brought down in the box. The referee pointed to the spot immediately.
Wahi rose to take the penalty and converted with composure. His successful shot from 12 yards tied the game at 1-1. The goal proved decisive as neither team could find a winner in the remaining moments. Timothy Weah received a yellow card at the end, followed by goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli in the 87th minute.
The statistics illustrated Marseille’s control throughout. They registered a total of 21 shots compared to Nice’s five. Marseille’s expected goals stood at 1.83 against Nice’s 1.35. The hosts’ passing accuracy reached 88 percent, with 573 successful passes from 653 attempts. The Nice goalkeeper made five crucial saves to keep his team in the game.
Hojbjerg earned an 8.3 rating for his all-action display. The midfielder made three key passes next to his crucial target. Weah contributed a 7.9 rating with solid defensive work. For Nice, Wahi’s late intervention proved vital despite his modest 6.9 rating.
This tie leaves Marseille with 56 points in 32 games, still in sixth position. Nice climb to 30 points from 32 games, although they remain in the bottom half. Marseille will be frustrated not to turn their dominance into victory. Nice, on the other hand, will take confidence from their resilience on the return.
Both teams face crucial games ahead. Marseille must maintain their push for European qualification. Nice needs consistent results to escape the danger of relegation.
