Manchester United held off a late Brentford comeback to claim a 2-1 win at Old Trafford, with Casemiro’s opener and Benjamin Å eÅ¡ko’s first-half strike proving decisive despite Mathias Jensen’s 87th-minute reply.
Manchester United entered the competition sitting third in the Premier League table with 58 points from 33 games. Brentford came in ninth on 48 points, looking to build momentum after a run of five consecutive draws. The visitors showed no signs of being a side without recent wins, dominating possession and testing United’s defense throughout.
Casemiro struck early for the home side and found the net in the 11th minute to give United a dream start. The Brazilian midfielder’s clinical finish set the tone for what would become a closely contested game. Luke Shaw was shown a yellow card just five minutes earlier, signaling that both sides would test the referee’s patience.
Brentford responded strongly but could not find an equalizer before the break. Å eÅ¡ko doubled United’s lead in the 43rd minute, arriving at just the right moment to tap home. The forward’s composure in front of goal gave United a 2-0 lead at the break.
In the second half, Brentford came out with renewed purpose. Sander van den Berg and Destiny Ouattara were booked as the visitors went ahead. United’s defence, led by Harry Maguire, remained resolute despite sustained pressure from the away side.
Jensen pulled one back for Brentford in the 87th minute, setting up a tense finish. The midfielder’s goal sparked hope among the visitors, who threw their bodies forward in search of an equaliser. However, United handled the closing stages effectively to preserve their advantage.
The stats reflected Brentford’s control. The visitors recorded 56 percent possession and completed 485 passes with 87 percent accuracy. United enjoyed 44 per cent possession but created more clear-cut chances, registering six shots on target compared to Brentford’s four.
Casemiro was named the most outstanding performer, scoring 9.5 and making 11 tackles in 95 minutes. Bruno Fernandes orchestrated the game from midfield, creating six key passes despite limited shot attempts. Jensen’s late intervention showed Brentford’s attacking threat but ultimately proved insufficient.
Expected goals data showed Brentford were slightly ahead at 1.43 to United’s 1.27, suggesting the visitors created slightly better chances. However, United’s clinical finishing in the first half was decisive. Brentford’s defensive discipline faltered at crucial moments, with four players receiving yellow cards.
This victory takes Manchester United to 61 points in 34 games, consolidating their third position. Brentford remain ninth on 48 points, their winless streak now stretching to six games in all competitions. The result suggests that United have the stamina needed for a strong end to the season.
United host their next opponents at Old Trafford, while Brentford travel looking to break their run of draws and defeats.
