Lyon thrashed Rennes 4-2 in a thrilling Ligue 1 match, with Corentin Tolisso’s superb display in midfield and clinical finishing proving decisive at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais.
Lyon secured a dominant win over Rennes on May 3, moving up to third place with 57 points from 31 games. The home side came into the match in good form, having won their last three matches. Rennes, fifth on 56 points, arrived in Lyon looking to maintain their four-match unbeaten run.
The match burst into life immediately. Mousa Tamari fired Lyon ahead in the sixth minute, giving the home crowd an early boost. Rennes soaked up the pressure before Roman Yaremchuk equalized in the 37th minute, dragging the visitors back into contention.
Lyon regained the lead moments later through a Corentin Tolisso penalty in the 42nd minute. The midfielder’s composure from the start proved crucial. Tolisso would finish the game with an 8.7 rating, adding two assists alongside his goal to orchestrate Lyon’s offensive play.
Rennes looked dangerous despite the loss. His high pressing created problems for Lyon’s defence. However, the home side maintained their intensity as the first half wound down, establishing control in midfield where Tolisso dominated proceedings.
In the second half, Lyon pulled away decisively. Esteban Lepaul extended their lead in the 48th minute, scoring just two minutes after the restart. The momentum had shifted entirely to the home side, who controlled 50 per cent possession but converted their chances with clinical efficiency.
Afonso Moreira added a fourth goal in the 52nd minute and effectively settled the match. Lyon’s offensive prowess overwhelmed Rennes’ defense. Endrick sealed the victory with a fifth goal in the 75th minute, although Rennes hit back thanks to Lepaul’s own contribution to make it 4-2.
Statistically, Lyon dominated the shot count with a total of 17 attempts compared to Rennes’ eight. The home team had nine shots on goal against Rennes’ five. Lyon’s expected goals (xG) of 2.61 reflected their best chances created, while Rennes managed just 0.77 xG despite their spirited efforts.
Yaremchuk’s performance earned a 7.9, while Lepaul (7.6) and Tamari (7.3) stood out for Rennes despite the loss. Endrick contributed significantly with an 8.5 rating, while Moreira added 8.3 to Lyon’s attacking arsenal.
The victory brings Lyon closer to the top two as the season enters the final stretch. Rennes, despite the defeat, maintains its strong position in fifth position. Lyon’s next challenge will test whether they can maintain this winning momentum in their quest for European qualification.
