Lens produced a clinical finishing masterclass to demolish Lyon 4-0 at the Groupama Stadium, with Wesley Saïd scoring twice to secure a dominant home win.
Lens arrived in Lyon sitting second in Ligue 1, two points ahead of their hosts. The visitors brought impressive form into the match, having won four of their last five matches. Lyon, meanwhile, finished fourth, but showed vulnerabilities that would prove costly this evening in May.
The away side struck with devastating efficiency in the opening half hour. Wesley Saïd opened the scoring in the 20th minute, firing past the Lyon defense to give Lens an early lead. Saïd doubled his tally just 12 minutes later in the 32nd minute, leaving Lyon’s back line in disarray.
Lyon struggled to mount a coherent response. Despite controlling 57 percent of the possession, they managed just four shots on goal all game. Their expected goals figure of 1.62 reflects their lack of cutting edge in the final third.
Lens added a third goal before the break. Florian Sotoca converted in the 45th minute, extending the visitors’ score to 3-0 at the break. The damage was already heavy, but Lens showed no signs of giving up.
The second half brought more of the same one-sided game. Florian Thauvin added a fourth goal in the 54th minute, effectively ending any hopes of a Lyon comeback. The match had become a procession for the visitors.
Lyon went ahead looking for consolation goals but found goalkeeper Mathieu Gorgelin unmovable. Gorgelin made four crucial saves to preserve the Lens goal. His dominant display earned him an 8.2 rating for the night.
Saïd’s two-goal performance earned him an 8.5 grade, the highest on the team. The striker’s movement and finish proved too much for Lyon’s defence. Sotoca and Thauvin complemented the attack with clinical finishes of their own.
Statistically, Lens converted their chances with ruthless precision. They took 14 shots in total, putting four on target and scoring all four goals. His expected goals of 1.46 underestimated his true dominance in front of goal.
Lyon’s possession advantage made no sense against Lens’ defensive organization. The visitors committed 11 fouls to Lyon’s 10, but controlled the pace and outcome of the match. Andrija Bulatovic anchored the midfield with four tackles and four key passes.
This result strengthens Lens’ title credentials. They are second with 70 points in 34 games. Lyon remain fourth with 60 points, their gap with the leader now more pronounced after this heavy defeat.
Lens go into their remaining games knowing they can compete with any team in France. Lyon must quickly regroup and address the defensive frailties exposed here.
