The defeat dealt a major blow to Rajasthan’s playoff hopes, while Delhi stayed alive in the race for the top four.

RR controlled large parts of the contest, especially in the first innings, but failed to finish strongly with the bat and later struggled badly both with the ball and in the field. Following the match, Parag admitted his team failed in almost every department and said their performance was not good enough for a team aiming to qualify for the playoffs.

Rajasthan Royals fail to capitalize after a strong start

Rajasthan Royals got off to a bright start thanks to the youngster after being asked to bat first. Vaibhav Suryavanshi46 which broke a quick fire and put the Delhi bowlers under early pressure. This momentum continued through the middle overs with impressive half-centuries Dhruv Jurel and Parag himself.

Jurel played 53 innings while Parag added 51 runs and was on hand to guide RR to a massive total. At one stage, Rajasthan looked set to cross the 220-run mark comfortably. However, events have taken a dramatic turn for the veteran Australian pacer’s demise Mitchell Starc changed the game with sensational magic.

Starc took four wickets and caused a collapse that prevented RR from fully cashing in on their strong platform. Rajasthan eventually finished with 193/8, a total Parag admitted was later well below expectations.

Speaking during the post-match presentation, the RR skipper said his team was in a very good position after 14 overs but they could not maximize the lead after being dismissed. According to Parag, Rajasthan should have finished with a score of 220 to 230.

“We were in a pretty good spot after 14 innings. We didn’t take advantage of that after I got out. It was … 220-230, something like that.” said Parag.

Riyan Parag reveals the reasons behind RR’s defeat

Parag did not hesitate to criticize his team’s overall performance. The RR captain admitted that the bowling unit was “not fit for purpose” and also defended his tactical decision to use it. Donovan Ferreira against two lefties in the chase.

“And as far as bowling, I think we just weren’t there. We weren’t up to the task. Ferreira wasn’t a gamble. I know it looks like a gamble on TV, but you’ve got two left-handers. I’d rather play Donovan, take a chance, than have Shanaka play another game. I tried hard,” Parag explained.

However, it was Rajasthan’s fielding that disappointed him the most. Parag called the pitching performance “very poor” and stressed that championship-winning teams cannot afford such sloppy performances in important games.

“Very poor. I think if you want to win trophies, if you want to compete every year, you have to be better than what we saw today.” added the RR captain.

He further added that Rajasthan Royals have not been able to play up to their potential in the last few matches and said that he has only the team to blame if they miss out on the playoffs. Parag also made it clear that he did not want RR to rely on the results of other teams to survive the tournament.

“If we keep playing like this, we’re not going to fight for the top four. I don’t even like to lead. I don’t like to talk to my team like that. It’s, ah, we need these guys to keep losing so we can win two games. We had an opportunity, we didn’t take it. So if we don’t qualify, it’s someone else’s fault.” Parag signed.
