Paris Saint Germain silenced Anfield on Tuesday night to claim a 0-2 victory over Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League. A disciplined defensive display coupled with two strong counter-attacks proved the difference for the visitors.
In this matchup, Liverpool took third place in the table with six wins from eight games. Meanwhile, PSG slipped to 11th, needing a good result to climb the table after a mixed start to their European campaign.
The game started with plenty of energy as Liverpool pressed early on, looking to use the home crowd to their advantage. However, PSG kept their cool under pressure, soaking up the initial waves of attack with compact form.
The breakthrough came in the 34th minute against the run of play. A quick transition allowed the visitors to exploit the space behind Liverpool’s backline, and they slotted the ball home to take a surprising lead.
Liverpool responded immediately by pushing more men forward, but they couldn’t find a way through PSG’s defence. The visitors went into the break with their slender advantage intact, frustrating the home side.
At the break, the tactical question was whether Liverpool could maintain their aggressive approach without leaving gaps. PSG just needed to continue with their defensive structure while waiting for more chances on the break.
In the second half, Liverpool dominated possession and created several half-chances in the penalty area. However, the final pass was often misplaced as the visiting keeper remained relatively untested throughout the period.
Disaster struck for the home team in the 78th minute when PSG doubled their lead. Another quick counter-attack caught Liverpool’s defense out of position, and the visitors put the ball into the net to seal the result.
Liverpool made several substitutions in the last ten minutes, but the momentum had shifted completely to the French side. The visitors controlled the tempo, effectively killing any hopes of a late home comeback.
Statistical analysis showed that Liverpool had 62% possession and recorded 14 shots, although only forced three saves. PSG managed 1.8xG in just six attempts, highlighting their extreme efficiency in front of goal.
This result leaves Liverpool third in the table, still well positioned despite the setback. PSG move up to ninth place, proving that they remain a dangerous opponent in their quest for the last 16.
