According to Cook, regular county games would benefit the youngsters more than playing in the IPL. He made it clear that Bethell “needs to play county cricket again” rather than stay in India without getting meaningful game time.
“He should sit out the IPL and go back to playing cricket” Cook said.
Cook’s comments echoed the traditional view that match exposure is the best way to improve a young player, especially at a crucial stage of development.

Pietersen was quick to respond and did not hold back in defending Bethell’s selection. Taking to X, the former England star claimed that Cook could not fully understand the value of being in the IPL set-up as he had never experienced it himself.
Pietersen emphasized that training alongside the best players in world cricket, sharing dressing rooms with elite performers and understanding the pressure of the league provides lessons that cannot be obtained elsewhere.
He strongly advised Bethell to stay in India, saying the experience alone would make him a better player in the long run. Pietersen’s impassioned response once again showed his long-standing support for franchise cricket and the IPL’s role in player development.

Bethell stands by his decision
Bethell himself has spoken positively about staying with RCB despite limited opportunities. In a recent chat on the Sky Cricket podcast, the young England pacer explained that just being a part of the tournament has improved his game. He said he felt like a better player than a month ago because of the standard of cricket around him and the chance to spend time with top international players. Bethell described the IPL as a unique experience that many people cannot fully understand until they are a part of it.
He also added that the quality of the tournament naturally pushes players to raise their standards, even subconsciously, due to the intensity and caliber of competition.
“With the guys here, learning the pure standards of cricket in India and the IPL, I feel better now after the World Cup a month ago. It’s something that a lot of people don’t understand how great it is to be around a team or a tournament when you’re here. It just has a completely different feel. It almost feels like everyone raises their game because they subconsciously know it,” Bethell said.

The first appearance has finally arrived for the English youngster
Despite strong competition in the RCB squad, Bethell finally got his first opportunity in IPL 2026 when they clashed with Gujarat Titans in the 34th match of the season. The left-hander scored 14 runs off 10 balls before being dismissed Muhammad Siraj. Although his stay was short, it was an important step in his IPL journey.
