IPL 2027: 3 players who can lead Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) after Rishabh Pant’s departure

The IPL landscape has witnessed a dramatic shake-up Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Delhi Capitals (DC) completed one of the biggest transactions in recent league history. Former captain of LSG Rishabh pants officially, he returned to the Delhi Capitals, the franchise where he spent nine memorable seasons before moving to Lucknow. In return, India’s best wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav will now represent the Super Giants going into the IPL 2027 season.

Pant joins Delhi in a revised deal worth ₹15 crore, much lower than the €27 crore deal that grabbed headlines in the previous auction cycle. And Kuldeep moves to Lucknow with his current salary of ₹ 13.5 crore. While the trade strengthens LSG’s bowling department and provides additional auction flexibility, it leaves a significant leadership void after the franchise’s disappointing 2026 campaign that finished bottom of the table.

With the team director Tom MoodDetermined to oversee a fresh start, Lucknow must now identify a captain capable of leading the team into its next chapter. Among the available options, some foreign stars stand out as leading contenders.

3 players who can lead LSG after Rishabh Pant’s exit

1) Mitchell Marsh

If recent performances are anything to go by, Mitchell Marsh seems to be the strongest candidate for the role. The Australian all-rounder was one of the few bright spots in a forgettable season for Lucknow, consistently producing impressive performances with the bat.

Marsh highlighted his value at the top of the order by scoring 563 runs and crossing 163 in the 2026 season. During his IPL career, he scored over 1292 runs while also scoring over 37 wickets with the ball.

In addition to his contributions in the field, Marsh brings significant leadership experience. As Australia’s T20I captain, he has amassed an impressive record and won praise for his aggressive yet calculated decision-making. His long association with LSG head coach Justin Langer and director Tom Moody could also be important.

A shared cricketing philosophy among the trio could help create a clear direction for the franchise. Given that Marsh is virtually guaranteed a place in the playing XI, his appointment as captain could provide both stability and a strong cultural foundation for the rebuilding process.

2) Nicholas Pooran

It is another serious competitor Nicholas Pooranhe already serves as the vice-captain of Lucknow and remains one of the most important players in the franchise. Retained for a massive ₹21 crore, Pooran is central to LSG’s plans going forward. The West Indian batsman played over 70 IPL matches and scored over 1,700 runs at a strike rate of over 155, making him one of the most devastating middle-order batsmen in the competition.

Perhaps its biggest advantage is familiarity. Pooran understands the dressing room environment, has worked closely with the management team and enjoys the trust of his teammates. Previous leadership roles with West Indies and various franchise teams further strengthen his case.

While his batting numbers may dip slightly in the 2026 season, few doubt his ability to single-handedly impact games. For a franchise looking to maintain continuity amid significant changes, Pooran may represent the safest and most seamless captaincy option.

3) Aiden Markram

It is the third option Aiden Markrama leader whose credentials speak for themselves. Widely respected for his calm demeanor and tactical awareness, the South African has established himself as one of the most successful captains in franchise cricket.
Markram’s leadership journey has included guiding the Sunrisers Eastern Cape to multiple SA20 titles and leading South Africa to a historic appearance in the T20 World Cup final. His reputation as a thoughtful strategist has only grown in the past few years.

Importantly, Markram is already a trusted figure in the wider Super Giants ecosystem, having captained affiliated teams in global leagues. This familiarity may make his transition into the LSQ leadership role relatively easy.

As Lucknow prepares for a new era after Pant’s departure, the franchise faces a crucial decision. Whether they choose Marsh’s aggressiveness, Pooran’s consistency or Markram’s championship pedigree, the appointment could shape the team’s direction for years to come. For a franchise looking to bounce back from a disappointing season, picking the right captain can be as important as the blockbuster trade itself.
