IPL 2026: Playoff qualifying scenarios explained as the race for the final spot heats up

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 the league stage is fast approaching and the playoff race has now reached an exciting stage. While several teams have already confirmed their places in the top four, several others are fighting hard for survival towards the final stage. As Net Run Rate (NRR) is again expected to play a major role, every remaining match can change the standings dramatically.

IPL 2026 playoff qualifying scenario for all teams

Historically, 16 points have usually been enough to secure a place in the IPL playoffs, although teams have previously won 14 points depending on their superior Net Run Rate. This season has shown once again how competitive the tournament is. While some teams peaked at the perfect time, others struggled with inconsistency and injuries at key moments in the campaign.

Here’s a look at each team’s current IPL 2026 qualifying scenario.

1. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)

Royal Challengers Bengaluru have already qualified for the IPL 2026 playoffs and are now focused on finishing in the top two. Sitting comfortably on 18 points with one match remaining against SRH, RCB can finish with a maximum of 20 points. RCB have been the most consistent team of the season and currently look like one of the strongest contenders for the title.

2. Gujarat Titans (GT)

Gujarat Titans sealed their place in the playoffs after reaching 16 points. Shubman Gill and his team still has a game against Chennai Super Kings and can finish the league stage with maximum 18 points. GT’s dominant bowling performances and consistent batting displays have once again made them one of the most balanced sides in the competition.

3. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)

Sunrisers Hyderabad have also qualified for the IPL 2026 playoffs after a stunning turnaround in the second half of the season. Pat Cummins the side has won several crucial encounters and now sits on 16 points with one game remaining against RCB. A win in that clash could significantly boost SRH’s chances of securing the top two.

4. Rajasthan Royals (RR)

Rajasthan Royals currently remain favorites to grab the last available playoff spot. RR are on 12 points and still have two matches against LSG and MI. If Rian Parag if the side wins both games, they will take their points tally to 16 and almost qualify for the play-offs. Depending on Net Run Rate and other results, even a win could keep them alive.

5. Kings of Punjab (PBKS)

Punjab Kings are still in the playoff race despite losing momentum in recent weeks. PBKS currently have 13 points and one game against Lucknow Super Giants. A win will take them to 15 points, which could be enough to qualify depending on how RR, KKR and other teams finish.

6. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)

Kolkata Knight Riders are mathematically alive but their chances are slim. KKR are currently on 11 points with two matches remaining against MI and DC. Even if they win both matches and finish with 15 points, KKR will still need a few more results to go in their favour.

7. Chennai Super Kings (CSK)

Chennai Super Kings are hanging on by a thread in the playoff race. The five-time champions currently have 12 points and can reach the maximum 14 points only if they beat Gujarat Titans in their last league match. CSK will need a few teams above them to beat as they hope their Net Run Rate remains competitive enough to enter the top four.

9. Mumbai Indians (MI)

Mumbai Indians have officially been eliminated from the IPL 2026 playoffs. Hardik Pandya and his team currently has eight points and only has a maximum of 12 points. With two games remaining, MI no longer have a mathematical chance of reaching the top four.

A disappointing second half of the campaign ultimately ended their hopes of another play-off appearance.
