The pacer went wicketless in his first five matches before snapping the drought against Gujarat Titans. With just two wickets in eight games and an economy rate of 8.80, Bumrah has struggled to make his usual impact at crucial stages of the innings.
Mahela Jayawardene named MI’s two ‘match winners’
Despite the form of both the players, Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene Chennai has thrown its full support behind the duo ahead of the high-stakes clash against the Super Kings.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Jayawardene emphasized the importance of supporting the experienced players at tough stages.
“They’re match winners and they’re human. They’re going to go through these things and their character is to come back and keep fighting,” Jayawardene said.
He also highlighted the mental aspect of the game, saying players like Suryakumar and Bumrah often put too much pressure on themselves to perform in every match.
“Our talk is not to put too much pressure on themselves because they feel like they can deliver on their own. It’s about reminding them that it’s okay—things happen. Let’s keep trying,” Jayawardene added.
The former Sri Lankan captain’s words underscore MI’s belief in the long-term value of their star performers even during a difficult campaign.
Fans expect MI to bounce back against CSK
Mumbai Indians will be looking to turn their fortunes around when they take on Chennai Super Kings at the famous MA Chidambaram Stadium. The clash assumes more significance after MI’s 103-run loss to CSK earlier in the season on April 23.
The loss exposed a number of weaknesses in MI’s set-up, including inconsistent batting at key moments and ineffective bowling. However, the team management believes there is still time to regroup and find the right combination.
