I wouldn’t buy most premium rain jackets, but I would buy this one

There comes a point in most people’s lives when they realize that you don’t always need the most premium equipment on the market.

In fact, it’s worth noting that some budget options are consistently better than premium (more expensive) options. For example, everyone loves to own a Porsche 911 Turbo until you’re car wrecked and gas prices hit all-time highs. When that happens, you wonder if the Prius wasn’t such a bad idea after all.

Although the rain jacket featured in this article is more budget-friendly, it narrowly missed out on the “Best Overall Rain Jacket” award in our Most Wanted 2026 test.

Introducing Walter Hagen 11 HydroCover Golf Short Sleeve Rain Jacket For Men.

To put it as the kids are putting it these days, the Walter Hagen P11 HydroCover Short Sleeve is a certified pimp and I recommend it.

What makes it so great?

It wins

If you’re anything like me, wearing a long-sleeved shirt on the golf course can feel suffocating.

I like short sleeves whenever the conditions allow. I live in a climate where temperatures often reach 90F and we get inches (yes, inches) of rain. Do I want to wear long sleeves in the rain? Hell no. The Walter Hagen P11 HydroCover SS allows me to enjoy the freedom of short sleeves without getting wet.

The other feature that won me over was the lightweight design and comfortable feel.

The P11 HydroCover SS fits and feels like your favorite T-shirt. I’d like to see the glass-half-empty crowd argue with that. Who doesn’t love the feel of their favorite T-shirt on their skin?

When you are comfortable, you play better golf. Fact. The case. Point.

Last but not least, the value is incredible. For $128, you’re getting a great fit, extreme comfort, and above-average waterproofing.

If we were to break down each of these three categories, you’re essentially paying just over $42 for each performance metric. As a soft goods expert, I say this is more than fair. It’s a steal.

If you’re looking for an affordable item of golf rain gear, this is the place to start.

Loss(es)

The Walter Hagen P11 HydroCover Golf SS has one major weakness: the short sleeve design.

While this design is exactly what won me over, it’s also its biggest downfall. In heavy rain, your forearms will get wet. If that bothers you, there are better options. Some golfers will argue that if you’re going to get wet at all, you might as well forget about wearing a rain jacket all together.

If near-total waterproofing is your top priority, you’re better off with a long-sleeve option. But if you’re okay with a little forearm exposure in exchange for comfort and breathability, you won’t be disappointed with the P11 HydroCover SS.

If the Walter Hagan P11 Hydrocover Golf SS isn’t for you, here’s a list of other pieces of golf rain gear we tested in 2026.
