Real Madrid held off a late Alaves fightback to claim a 2-1 win at the Bernabéu, with first-half goals from Kylian Mbappé and Vinicius Junior proving decisive despite Tomás Martínez’s dramatic 93rd-minute consolation.
Real Madrid went into the game in second place in La Liga with 70 points from 31 games. Alavés came in 17th place, struggling with just 33 points and desperate to avoid the relegation zone. The home side dominated possession throughout the match but faced a resolute defensive display from their visitors.
Mbappé opened the scoring in the 30th minute, firing past the Alaves goalkeeper to give Madrid the lead. The French striker’s clinical finish came after latching on to a loose ball in the penalty area. Real Madrid’s attacking threat remained constant as they controlled the tempo.
Aurélien Tchouameni received a yellow card in the 35th minute for a hard tackle. The midfielder’s caution reflected Madrid’s aggressive approach to breaking down Alavés’ compact defence. Despite their dominance, Madrid struggled to create clear-cut chances beyond Mbappé’s opener.
The second half began with Madrid extending their lead. Vinicius Junior doubled the lead in the 50th minute, taking advantage of Alaves’ defensive vulnerability. The Brazilian winger’s finish looked to have settled the game comfortably for the home side.
Madrid controlled the ball for 62 percent of the game and registered 24 shots in total. However, only eight efforts have tested the Alavés goalkeeper. Vinicius Junior put in an outstanding performance, earning a rating of 9.5 and creating five key passes next to his goal.
Alaves has shown resilience in the closing stages. Tomás Martínez pulled one back in the 90+3 minute with a late header, setting up a tense finish. The visitors had registered just four shots on target all game, making their late goal a rare moment of attacking success.
Real Madrid’s defense held firm despite Alavés’ desperate late push. The hosts completed 628 passes with 90 per cent accuracy, showing their control. Dean Huijsen impressed in central defence, earning an 8.9 rating and making three crucial tackles.
The victory maintains Madrid’s second position with 73 points in 32 games. Alavés remains in 17th position despite the strong finish, still fighting for relegation with 33 points. Madrid’s next challenge comes as they chase the league title.
