Naseem Hamed sparked a strong reaction online after taking aim at Johnny Nelson during a recent podcast appearance, with many fans quickly siding with the former cruiserweight champion and analyst.
“There’s only ever been one snake in that gym. If he fought in my own backyard, I’d pull the curtains. We’re far, far apart in ability and skill and the world knows it,” Hamed told talkSport Boxing.
“I told Spencer Oliver, I’m not talking about him. He doesn’t deserve me talking about him. I’ve said what I had to say about him before. Right now I’m not talking about him. He doesn’t deserve my vote about him.”
Responses to X were overwhelmingly hostile towards Naseem Hamed, with many users accusing him of sounding bitter, disrespectful and unnecessarily belligerent in his comments about Johnny Nelson.
Users praised Nelson’s reputation within boxing and broadcasting, describing him as respected, grounded and loved by fans. Several responses also said that Hamed had damaged his own image by re-opening old grudges from the Brendan Ingle gym years.
While many still recognized Hamed as one of Britain’s most talented and entertaining fighters, they argued that Nelson had behaved better since his retirement and built a stronger reputation outside the ring.
Others pointed to Nelson’s long cruiserweight title reign and his second career in television as evidence that he earned respect in a different way.
Only a small minority treated the exchange as harmless banter between two old names from the same era. Most of the reaction sided with Nelson, calling Hamed’s comments unnecessary.
Hamed still commands attention when he speaks, but this time the support seemed to go firmly to Nelson. You have a guy who hasn’t fought in almost 24 years, yet he carries these Wincobank grudges like it happened yesterday.
Naz had the higher peak, but Nelson had the longer reign and a seamless transition to the media. Seeing Nelson as the “voice of boxing” on TV might be the ultimate irritation for someone who feels they still need to be the center of the universe.
Unlike Nelson, who also retired as a champion, Naz’s career ended with a whimper after the Barrera loss and a lackluster win over Manuel Calvo. That kind of exit often leaves a fighter looking for targets to blame for how the story ended.
