Celta Vigo pulled off a stunning upset at the Riad Air Metropolitano, defeating Atletico Madrid 1-0 thanks to Borja Iglesias’ clinical finish in the 62nd minute.
Atlético de Madrid dominated possession and territory, but lacked the cutting edge needed to break down a determined Celta Vigo defence. The visitors executed a disciplined game plan and struck at the perfect time to secure three crucial points in their battle for European qualification.
Atlético started brightly, controlling the ball from the start with 56% possession. The home side pushed forward with intent, testing Celta’s back line early on. However, the visitors remained compact and organised, thwarting Atlético’s attacking moves in the early stages.
Alex Baena became Atlético’s most dangerous player in the first half. The midfielder created space with intelligent movement and effectively linked play between defense and attack. Despite their dominance, Atlético struggled to find a clear opening against Celta’s well-drilled form.
Celta offered little going forward but remained dangerous on the counter-attack. The visiting team’s discipline paid dividends as they kept Atlético at bay. Ionuț Radu made a comfortable save to deny any early lead, with Atletico’s expected goals at just 1.98 in the 45th minute.
The first half ended goalless, although Atlético had created the best chances. They registered a total of 20 shots compared to Celta’s three, but accuracy remained their main problem. Ten corners did not get the breakthrough they needed.
Atlético pressed harder after the restart, feeling they needed to find a way through. The pressure mounted as the home team pushed more bodies forward. However, Celta remained patient, waiting for the moment to strike.
That moment came in the 62nd minute. Borja Iglesias picked up a loose ball and shot the Atlético goalkeeper with clinical precision. The goal sent shockwaves through the stadium as the visitors took an unexpected lead.
Atlético responded immediately, looking for an equaliser. Koke and Marcos Llorente pushed forward with renewed urgency. Despite their efforts, Celta’s defense held firm, with Javi Rodríguez providing crucial defensive cover.
The statistics told the story of Atlético’s frustration. They managed just one shot on goal out of 20 total attempts. Celta, meanwhile, only needed one chance to find the back of the net, and Iglesias’ conversion proved decisive.
Yellow cards flew in the closing stages as the tension mounted. Baena received a warning for Atlético in the 66th minute, while Iñigo Moriba and Celta’s Felipe López also saw yellow. Disciplinary issues reflected the intensity as Atlético chased a draw that never came.
The defeat leaves Atlético de Madrid in fourth position with 63 points in 34 games. Their recent form has suffered, with just one win in their last five games. Celta de Vigo move up to sixth place with 47 points, boosting their European hopes with this crucial away win.
