If Giacomo Agostini is a rider today, he chooses Ducati from Aprilia, Yamaha as his bike of choice.

He said in an interview with MotoSprint ItalyGiacomo Agostini was asked which bike he wanted to ride from today’s lineup in MotoGP.

Unsurprisingly, Agostini chose Ducati, relying on their long-standing success and reputation in MotoGP despite their struggles this season.

“To ride what? To compete? To win? Then I’ll take the Ducati, because the rider doesn’t say ‘I won because I have a Yamaha, MV, Ducati, etc. brand.’

“I want to win and finally I won because I have a Ducati, it’s the best. So it helped me to win. The main thing is the bike that takes you to victory, that’s it. I always want a bike that wins.”

Although Agostini is firm in his belief that Ducati has the best bike in MotoGP, he also explained that ultimately the rider is responsible for their success.

Giacomo Agostini says riders should have ‘more influence’ on their MotoGP results.

Speaking further in the interview, Agostini explained why he is worried about the current state of MotoGP, citing the lack of rider input and its impact on their results.

“The rider should have more influence on the victory. Now there is a problem with all this power: you have to save the tires, otherwise you will not get the race to the end. And I say, guys, these are speed races, not regularity races!

“The difference the fans are looking for doesn’t show up. Because the reality is, we see it in other sports: we like the characters, we don’t like them all.

“Today many win, why? Because if you have a little problem and you can’t win, you often fight for the podium one race, the next race is six tenths later, because the bike doesn’t give you 100%.”

We rely a lot on the bike, but instead I want to lean more on the rider. I repeat: you are not for the rider, not for the bike, and therefore we fall in love with the one who does what not everyone else can. Otherwise, like that, you’ve done well, you’ve done well, you’ve done me well, everyone’s good.

Agostini comes from a very driver-reliant era in motorcycle racing, and for a veteran like him, the most mechanically-oriented conditions in MotoGP are not great.
