The omission of Crawley and Pope is arguably the biggest talking point from the lineup announcement. Both players endured a tough Ashes series and failed to cement their place in England’s top order.
Crawley managed 273 runs in the series at an average of 27, while Pope scored just 125 runs in the three Tests before being dropped for the final two matches. England selectors have decided to look elsewhere this season, preferring players who have performed consistently in county cricket.
The decision represents a clear change in approach as England look to build a more stable batting line-up ahead of an important home summer.
District performers are finally rewarded
The inclusion of Gay among the new names was one of the most worthy choices of the season. The 26-year-old Durham batsman was in exceptional form in the County Championship, with a remarkable average of 92 for 552 runs, including three centuries.
James Rew‘s rise continued at an impressive pace. The 22-year-old Somerset star has built a strong reputation in county cricket with his mature batting and composure behind the stumps. Rew has already registered 12 first-class hundreds, the most by any player aged 22 or under in the history of the County Championship.
Meanwhile, Sonny Baker‘s selection highlights England’s continued focus on developing fast bowlers capable of troubling opposition batsmen with raw pace. The Hampshire quick has taken 14 wickets in the current Championship season and is regarded as one of the fastest young bowlers in English cricket.

Rehan Ahmed returns while Jofra Archer remains unavailable
England have also recalled leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed, who currently represents Delhi Capitals in the IPL. Interestingly, despite having already played 10 Tests, all of Ahmed’s appearances have come overseas, meaning he is yet to play a Test at home for England.
Jacob BethellRoyal Challengers will link up with the team after completing their franchise duties that are part of Bengaluru’s IPL campaign.
Ollie Robinson Returning to the Test set-up for the first time since February 2024, Fisher’s strong county performances have earned him another opportunity at international level. UK Managing Director Rob Key he explained that the team was selected based on proven performers and new talents.
Fast bowler Jofra Archerbut he remains unavailable for the opening Test as England continue to closely monitor his workload and recovery during his gradual return to red-ball cricket.
