LAREDO (ESP, April 18). Slovenia’s Klara Lukan made history by becoming the first European to break the 30-minute barrier in the 10km road race. Lucan won the Villa de Laredo 10k (WA Label) in 29:50 (14:54/14:56), shaving 17 seconds off Megan Keith’s previous European record, the fourth time the record has been broken this year. “When I saw the result, I cried tears of joy. This is a historic feat, I am the first from Europe to run below the magic mark. I did what I envisioned and planned with coach Tej Korent who believed in me. He told me some time ago that I can win the European record, that I am ready for it, and it happened,” Lucan said. Germany’s Konstanze Klosterhalfen broke her own national record in second place in 30:37 and Esther Pfeiffer was third in 30:45, beating Germany’s previous record by one second. Ethiopia’s Biniam Mehari won the men’s race by exactly one minute ahead of Ethiopia’s Hagos Eyob (27:55 PB), with Britain’s Rory Leonard third in 27:57. With the help of European Athletics.
