Canelo Camp Signals Resendiz-Munguia Winner Next

Eddy Reynoso may have said more than intended while discussing Canelo Alvarez’s next move, as his comments pointed less to Christian Mbilli and more to the winner of next week’s Jaime Munguia-Armando Resendiz fight.

Canelo is expected to return on a Riyadh season card in September after recovering from left elbow surgery. Reynoso told Ring Magazine that super middleweight remains the plan and mentioned several possible opponents, including Mbilli. Still, the strongest language in the interview came when he talked about the May 2 match between Munguia and Resendiz for the WBA title.

“This time it’s Munguia vs. Resendiz in a Mexican fight on a Mexican card,” Reynoso told Ring Magazine when discussing the Cinco de Mayo weekend. “It’s going to be a tremendous fight, and we’re prepared to win. This fight will be so good it will steal the show. They have the ingredients to take the spotlight away from the main event.”

It stood out because Reynoso trains Munguia and has a direct stake in the outcome, but it also sounded like early positioning for what’s to come. If Munguia wins, a rematch with Canelo would be easy to sell to a Mexican audience and easy to build around. If Resendiz wins, he will arrive with a belt and fresh momentum.

Mbilli was called a “big challenge” by Reynoso after his recent win over Lester Martinez, but the tone was different. It sounded like one option on a list, while the Munguia-Resendiz fight received the full sales pitch.

Canelo’s side also ruled out other routes. Reynoso said the David Benavidez fight is over and suggested there is little chance of revisiting it. Staying at 168 pounds also makes a Dmitry Bivol rematch less likely.

This leaves a smaller field than it first appears. When camps start months in advance to price a fight this hard, it’s usually worth paying attention.
