Cagliari – Atalanta 3-2: Mendy and Borrelli lead thrilling comeback as hosts overturn early deficit at Unipol Domus.
Cagliari pulled off a remarkable comeback win against Atalanta on 27 April, winning 3-2 in a breathless Serie A match. Paul Mendy’s quick-fire brace gave the home side an unexpected lead, but Gianluca Scamacca’s brace drew Atalanta level at half-time. Gennaro Borrelli’s second-half goal was decisive, securing three crucial points for the struggling home side.
The visitors arrived at the Unipol Domus as clear favourites. Atalanta were in seventh place in the table with 54 points from 34 games, while Cagliari were in 16th place with just 36 points. The home side had won just one of their last five matches, going into the match desperate for a positive result.
CÃ ller surprised everyone with an explosive start. Mendy fired past the Atalanta goalkeeper in the first minute, catching the visitors cold. Just seven minutes later, Mendy doubled the lead with another clinical finish, leaving Atalanta reeling after just two minutes of football.
The visiting team responded with characteristic quality and possession. Atalanta controlled the ball but initially struggled to break down Cagliari’s compact defence. However, Scamacca changed the complexion of the game when he scored in the 40th minute, pulling one back before the break.
Amazingly, Scamacca struck again almost immediately. In the 45th minute he tied the game, sending the two teams into the break tied at 2-2. The turnaround had been swift and dramatic after Cagliari’s dream start.
The second half began with CÃ ller sensing an opportunity. Borrelli entered the pitch and made an instant impact. In the 47th minute, he dismissed the home side 3-2, giving Cagliari a lead they would not relinquish.
Atalanta pressed hard to equalize in the remaining minutes. The visitors dominated possession with 73 percent possession and created more chances overall. However, the Cagliari goalkeeper made crucial saves to maintain the advantage.
The statistics reflect Atalanta’s dominance in many areas. Atalanta completed 744 passes with 86 percent accuracy compared to Cagliari’s 266 at 68 percent. The visitors also recorded six shots on target to Cagliari’s four, and boasted an expected goals ratio of 1.72 to Cagliari’s 1.51.
Despite the statistical advantage, Atalanta could not find the breakthrough. Mendy’s two-goal haul earned him an 8.3, while Scamacca’s tireless double work earned him an 8.5. Borrelli’s crucial goal made him the unlikely hero.
The win lifts Cagliari out of the relegation zone, offering breathing room in their battle for Serie A survival. Atalanta, meanwhile, remain seventh but face questions about consistency after relinquishing such a dominant position.
