The Ring champion says his team has mapped out a path to collect every major cruiserweight title
Jai Opetaia says becoming the undisputed cruiserweight champion remains his top priority and believes the goal is within reach. Speaking at a fan event in Washington, DC, the undefeated Australian revealed that discussions with his team have produced a plan aimed at securing every major belt.
When asked about his goals during a recent fan event in Washington, DC, Opetaia made it clear that collecting every major title remains at the top of his agenda.
“I actually had a good sit-down with some of the team today,” Opetaia told the media. “We hope to make that dream possible by the end of the year. We have that perfect plan, but early next year would be good, but undisputed is what I want.”
“Any of these other belt holders want it, but I say it’s an easy fight to make. All they have to do is reach out.”
Opetaia (29-0, 23 KOs) has established himself as one of the premier fighters in cruiserweight and has frequently expressed frustration at his inability to secure the biggest fights available in the division.
One of the most important fights on the table remains a showdown with David Benavidez. Benavidez previously described Opetaia as “a great fighter” and said the bout is “definitely a fight I want,” while also calling Opetaia’s move to Zuffa Boxing and states that he has no interest in competing for a Zuffa title. Those promotional differences have complicated negotiations for a fight many consider the greatest available at cruiserweight.
Opetaia’s pursuit of undisputed status could involve fights against Gilberto Ramirez and the eventual resolution of the WBC title picture, while a meeting with Benavidez remains one of the division’s most anticipated possibilities.
