Brighton produced a dominant performance to crush Chelsea 3-0 at the Amex Stadium, with Ferdi KadıoÄŸlu’s opener setting the tone for a comprehensive victory.
Brighton reached ninth place with 47 points from 33 games, looking for momentum after a run of mixed form. Chelsea were sixth on 48 points but arrived on the south coast struggling, having won just one of their last five games. The visitors had to quickly arrest their poor form.
The hosts made their intentions clear from the opening moments. Kadıoğlu struck in just the third minute, picking up a loose ball and firing past goalkeeper Robert Sánchez. Brighton had taken an early lead and immediately put Chelsea under pressure.
Brighton controlled possession in the first half, with 54 percent of possession. They created numerous chances and forced Sánchez to make several saves. Chelsea struggled to build offensive momentum and rarely threatened Brighton’s goal.
The visitors were shown a yellow card when William Fofana was booked in the 45th minute. However, Chelsea were unable to generate the attacking play needed to trouble Brighton’s defence. The home team entered the break with a significant lead.
Brighton extended their lead in the 56th minute when Jack Hinshelwood added a second goal. The defender’s strike doubled the lead and effectively ended any hopes of a Chelsea comeback. Hinshelwood’s finish was clinical and well done.
Yoane Minteh was booked for Brighton in the 58th minute as the game became increasingly one-sided. Chelsea continued to struggle for creative ideas and were unable to break down the home defence. Brighton’s midfield controlled the tempo throughout the game.
Danny Welbeck sealed victory in stoppage time, scoring in the 90th minute to make it 3-0. His clinical finish completed a dominant display from the hosts. Brighton’s attacking play proved too much for a Chelsea side that offered little resistance.
Brighton registered a total of 15 shots with nine on target, while Chelsea managed just six shots with none finding the target. Brighton’s expected goals stood at 2.19 compared to Chelsea’s 0.38. The statistics reflect the gulf in quality between the two sides.
Kadıoğlu earned a 9.0 rating for his outstanding performance, while Kaoru Mitoma provided 3 key assists in an influential display. Sanchez made four saves for Chelsea but could not avoid defeat.
This result leaves Brighton with 50 points in ninth position, while Chelsea remain in sixth position with 48 points. Brighton’s clinical finishing and defensive control proved decisive. The win represents a major statement of intent from the home team.
