Riyan Parag will pay a heavy price for his reputation during RR against PBKS

With the current financial structure of the IPL, a 25 percent fine on Parag’s big man is no small matter. Having bagged a whopping ₹14 crore contract for the 2026 season, Parag’s per-game earnings are around ₹1 crore. As a result, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) paid him ₹25 lakh to set aside the verdict.

While the fine is significant for a first-time offence, the BCCI’s decision to treat it as a Level 1 offense shows a desire to send a stern warning without resorting to a multi-match ban. According to the official notice submitted in the morning of April 30, Paraq was charged with articles 2.1 and 2.21 of the Code of Conduct of the ECHR.

As the rule book does not explicitly mention smoking or smoking within the confines of the dressing room, the Match Referee, Amit SharmaHe referred to the catch-all clause of Article 2.21. This article is designed to address this behavior”discredits the game” and includes:

  • Public law violations
  • Distrustful behavior
  • Actions prejudicial to the interests of cricket

In addition to the fine, Parag received one demerit point. The BCCI confirmed that the player had admitted the offense and accepted the sanction, waiving his right to a formal hearing to expedite the incident.

Setting a precedent with RR skipper in the digital age

The BCCI is said to be taking the matter seriously so that the family-friendly image of the IPL is not tarnished. The Board of Directors stated in its official statement that “to explore other options for taking strict action against the erring team and officials” to prevent such situations in the future.

The dressing room is traditionally considered a sacred space in cricket and the sight of e-cigarettes in such a high-performance environment has drawn criticism from veterans and fans alike. The distraction comes at a sensitive time for Rajasthan Royals, who are currently in contention for the top four. While Parag has every right to lead his team in the upcoming games, his conduct both on and off the field will undoubtedly be in the spotlight as the tournament draws to a close.
