Agit Kabayel pays respect to Oleksandr Usyk as he declares himself ready to take over

Agit Kabayel paid tribute to Oleksandr Usyk after the unified heavyweight champion vacated the WBC, WBA and IBF titles, calling the Ukrainian a true champion while making it clear he is ready to lead the division’s next generation.

Rather than expressing frustration over a fight that will now never happen, the undefeated German praised Usyk for stepping aside instead of delaying the heavyweight title picture.

“A true champion is defined by his actions inside and outside the ring,” Kabayel said Instagram.

Usyk has won everything there is to win, fought the best of the best and proved his greatness time and time again.

Putting down the straps, he shows his class again. He does not hold back the division – he gives the next generation its chance.”

Kabayel admitted he had hoped to face Usyk before the former undisputed champion’s retirement, but said his admiration outweighed any disappointment.

“Of course I wanted to share the ring with him one day, but I have nothing but respect for everything he has achieved. I wish him and his family nothing but the best,” Kabayel said.

“I hope I will be there for your last dance and get the chance to pay tribute to an outstanding career.”

The message ended on a lighter note before turning to Kabayel’s own ambitions.

“From today I will stop pushing the horses… 😅

“Because one thing is certain:

“I’m ready to take over.”

The WBC is now expected to formalize its heavyweight championship picture, with Kabayel in line to inherit the full title after serving as interim champion. A first defense could follow later this year as the division begins a new chapter following Usyk’s decision.

The undefeated contender enters this position after back-to-back victories over Arslanbek Makhmudov, Frank Sanchez and Zhilei Zhang, establishing himself as one of the heavyweight division’s top names.
