Egypt and Iran drew 1-1 in Group G at Lumen Field on Saturday. A point to each of the two sides with work to do in the final standings.
Egypt moves to five points after three games. Iran goes up to three points. The draw keeps Egypt well placed in Group G, while Iran avoid elimination for now.
Egypt’s high possession game was clear from the start. They controlled 61% of the ball and completed 512 of 587 passes, pressuring Iran back into their own half for long periods.
Iran responded quickly. Taremi was brought down in the area, but his penalty was saved. He reacted quicker to the rebound and equalized in the 11th minute.
Ramin Rezaeian then put the ball into the net for Iran in the 14th minute, but the goal was not to be stopped. Egyptian defender Mohamed Abdelmonem limped off soon after, replaced by Y. Ibrahim.
Saber, booked before being substituted at half-time, scored his team’s only goal. Their first end gave Egypt the platform to control large parts of the match.
