After dominating Ramirez, does Cinco De Mayo weekend belong to David Benavidez?

As he continued to make his ring run, David Benavidez was joined by Hall of Famer Mike Tyson and boxing star Ryan Garcia. As Benavidez and Zurdo stood in the ring, fight fans expected a very entertaining battle.

During the first round, the speed advantage was evident as Benavidez consistently landed a sharp jab and some solid right hands. Benavidez closed the round by connecting with one of his signature rapid fire combinations.

During the early part of the third round, southpaw Zurdo Ramirez experienced some success finishing off the jab. However, after the first minute of action, Benavidez took over the round by executing the catch-and-shoot.

The fourth round was the beginning of the end for defending champion Zurdo Ramirez. Benavidez spent most of the fourth round walking Ramirez down while landing hard shots to the body and head.

With ten seconds left in the fourth, Benavidez landed a flurry of shots that sent Ramirez to the canvas. Ramirez was able to stand up when the bell rang to officially end round number four.

Zurdo Ramirez courageously continued to stand in the pocket and fight back, with a bumped nose and severe swelling around his right eye. In the final 12 seconds of round 6, Benavidez landed another quick flurry of shots.

Zurdo Ramirez took a knee, was counted out, and Benavidez earned a historic victory. With the win, David Benavidez became the first boxer in history to win world titles at 168, 175 and cruiserweight.

After putting on an extremely impressive performance, newly unified WBO WBA Cruiserweight World Champion David Benavidez (32-0, 26 KOs) made his case for consideration regarding the top spot on the pound-for-pound list.

In addition to his position on the pound-for-pound list, Benavidez may have cemented his spot as the new face of Cinco de Mayo weekend. Boxing legend Canelo Alvarez held the date for a considerable amount of time.

Because of his actions Saturday night, it looks like Cinco de Mayo weekend now belongs to David Benavidez. If Canelo objects to the passing of the torch, perhaps he can prove his case during the 2027 edition of Cinco de Mayo.

“I saw Canelo in the building. Hey, let me ask the fans this, do you want to see Canelo vs. David Benavidez?”

The crowd responded to the question with a loud roar of approval. David Benavidez doesn’t want to leave a Canelo vs Benavidez fight on the table, but due to his history of ducking this particular matchup, it looks good for Canelo to leave the fight right there on the table.

Realistically, David Benavidez wants to improve his legacy, and he has a number of legitimate options available to him. He could stay at cruiserweight and fight Jai Opetaia, or he could go back to 175 to fight Dmitri Bivol or Artur Beterbiev.
