World Cup Classification – Group B
Switzerland secured a crucial 2-1 win over Canada at BC Place, thanks to a stellar display from young forward Johan Manzambi.
The hard-fought World Cup triumph puts the two teams level in their group. Manzambi proved to be the hero of the night, scoring one goal and creating another.
Both nations went into the match on the back of positive early results in the tournament. Canada led the group on goal difference, while Switzerland looked to continue their steady start.
The match started with a lot of intensity as the two midfields clashed early on. In the 32nd minute, refereeing tensions flared when Cyle Larin and Granit Xhaka were shown yellow cards after a heated argument.
Canada created several decent openings in the first half, but struggled to find the target. Switzerland controlled the ball well, maintaining 56 per cent possession but did not break down the Canadian defense before the whistle.
A goalless first half left both coaches searching for answers. Switzerland needed much more urgency in the final third, while Canada looked to capitalize on quick counter-attacks.
The Swiss responded immediately after the interval. Just seconds after kick-off in the 46th minute, Rubén Vargas fired a brilliant shot into the net after a nice pass from Breel Embolo.
Switzerland doubled their lead in the 57th minute of play. Manzambi guided home a precise finish after finding space in the penalty area to make it 2-0.
Canada refused to back down and pushed more men forward to salvage a point. Substitute promise David tapped home in the 76th minute to give his side hope of a late comeback.
The closing stages were tense as Liam Millar was booked in the 87th minute. However, the Swiss defense held firm in the face of late pressure to secure the vital three points.
Canada won the expected goal battle with 1.19 xG compared to Switzerland’s 1.06 xG. The Canadians registered 11 shots in total, but the Swiss defense remained compact and disciplined.
With this result, both Switzerland and Canada are four points apart in the group standings. Both teams remain in a very strong position to qualify for the knockout rounds of the World Cup.
