Speaking on Box discussion podcast, Marco Melandri was asked about the lack of strong performances from Fabio Quattararo.
Melandri Quattararo is mentally exhausted from the roof this year on the Yamaha bike and believes he cannot bring himself to give any race his all.
“I think he’s mentally exhausted. When you get to that point, you don’t want to try anymore. I think he’s at a point where he’s on the right track and he can’t wait to get out.”
“It’s hard to understand when someone says, ‘You’re lucky, you’re going to get a lot of money for your dream job.’
“But after a long time, when you practice to get certain results, you get in a way, you get into a really difficult headspace because you know you can’t improve anything.”
Is Yamaha wrong to re-sign Fabio Quatararo for 2024?
Marco Melandri says Fabio Quattararo’s situation cannot be compared to other frustrated riders
Asked why Quatartaro’s situation was different to Marc Marquez’s final year with Honda, Melandri admitted that the two are very different as riders and people.
“You have to know each situation from the inside to judge the case, not all minds are the same, people react in different ways.
“It’s also difficult to understand the atmosphere around the driver. It’s a series of situations that look easy to solve from the outside, but when you’re in that headspace, it’s very difficult.”
This negative attitude in his thinking has made the Yamaha rider very vocal in his criticism of the team and the bike.
Recently, Quattararo admitted that he had spoken too much against Yamaha And he should have made his criticisms a little more cryptic.
But there are questions to be asked as to why. Yamaha didn’t stop Quatararo from doing interviews. When you know it will take a critical approach.
Regardless of how the situation is handled, it’s clear that neither Quatararo nor Yamaha want to end their partnership on a high in 2027, as both sides seem content to see out the season.
