At the age of 38, the Irish Olympian Ciaran Ó Lionaird died


A 3:52 mile and European indoor 3000m medalist has died suddenly in Montreal.

Ciaran O’Lionaird, who ran for Ireland in the 1500m at London 2012 and won European indoor 3000m bronze in 2013, has died in Montreal aged 38.

Ó Lionáird also competed at the World Championships in 2011 where he finished 10th in the final, clocking a PB of 3:34.46 in Belgium that year.

He briefly worked with coach Alberto Salazar in the run-up to the London 2012 Olympics, but was often plagued by injuries and finished 13th in his heats in London.

Achilles surgery followed and he retired in 2016 at the age of 28. An attempt was made to bring back the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, but he battled illness and retired again.

He worked for a spell with Nike in the US and Mexico but was found dead in Montreal on Tuesday.
