Eddie Hearn says Tyson Fury’s extra fight won’t save him

Eddie Hearn says Tyson Fury is free to take another fight before his planned showdown with Anthony Joshua, but he doesn’t believe it will change what happens when the two British heavyweights finally meet.

Fury is expected to return to Dublin later this summer ahead of a proposed fight against Joshua later in the year. The former heavyweight champion recently returned from retirement and scored a points victory over Arslanbek Makhmudov, putting himself back on track for the much-discussed clash with Joshua.

However, Hearn suggested an additional outing would make little difference.

“If he needs another fight, let him have another fight,” Hearn told IFL TV. “He just had 12 good rounds against Makhmudov. It’s a bit of a gap in between. No problem. Let him do what he has to do.

“But it’s not going to save him. It’s not going to save him because I know what happens in this fight.”

The Matchroom chairman was in London to promote Anthony Joshua’s July 25 return against Kristian Prenga. While much of the focus remains on a potential Joshua-Fury fight later this year, Hearn stressed that Joshua’s team cannot afford to overlook the immediate task ahead.

He pointed to Oleksandr Usyk’s difficult night against Rico Verhoeven in May as an example of what can happen when an underdog exceeds expectations.

“Things like Rico against Usyk, it makes you even more tuned in for things like this,” Hearn said. “We cannot afford to take our eye off the ball.”

Prenga enters the fight undefeated in his last 20 professional fights and has stopped every opponent during that stretch. Hearn admitted that Joshua’s camp is treating the contest seriously despite the attention already focused on Fury.

The expectation remains that a Joshua-Fury fight will be completed later this year if both men come through their summer assignments.

Hearn’s view is that another fight could help Fury stay active, but it won’t change the outcome he expects once the long-awaited heavyweight showdown finally arrives.
